For any given reason mostly work related while you relocate here are some tips that will help you find your new home.

Is Alpha smarter than a 5th grader?

 The first thing our Marketing/HR representative wanted us to know when we landed here is - where all the 50 states fall(roughly:) on the map and the important cities in the USA.Google to the rescue.Type in your new work location and it will bring all that you need and that you don't in and around that area.Gather first hand information about the new location from friends/relatives who already live there or the guy who interviewed you.And some 2nd hand information from your network - The Internet.


Sharing is not just an option anymore for Alpha

You will not be able to rent/lease on your day one in the country, as the rental people will run a background check and will reject you.Not because you are a criminal or that you ran crazy across the busy interstate but because you don't have the magic wand AKA credit score.Whether you are renting or buying a house,loaning for a car ,applying for a credit card or even getting married:) you need a good credit score.It usually takes an year for you to get there.Until then you will have to find a partner who has a good credit score and who had already rented or owns a house and is looking for a roommate.


Operation Beta

For Desis - sulekha.com is "The One" and craigslist etc are not bad options either.Location,Transportation and Rent are a few important things to consider while looking for an apartment.If you work downtown or if you don't have a car make sure there is a train/bus station close by using google maps etc.


Beta ,this is Alpha do you copy?

Make sure you visit the place and talk to your partner/would-be roomie.Whether you are finding a life partner or room partner Internet/photos/telephone conversations are far from real.While there is not much you can do with people and their volatile minds , you can atleast be sure that there are no bugs/roaches.When you are there in person ask as many questions as you can and gather all the information you need to make a decision.Even if you are sharing an apartment with someone , try to get on to the lease by paying a nominal fee.And pay the rent once in a while using your credit/debit card or check.This will help boost your credit score which as i said is magically(weirdly) important in the paradise nation.


Alpha - Army of one

If you are in a position to lease/rent on your own, look out for the move-in specials.Most of the properties run move in specials once in a while.They might offer you a free first month and half off of the 2nd months rent etc.They even offer a referral amount to your friend if he is already living in the property.Visit sites likerent.com which send you a 100 dollar gift card just for filling in a simple survey while giving you useful info.Depending on the duration of the lease that you sign your rent will vary.


There might be a 50 to 200 dollar difference in a months rent between a 6 month and a one year lease.So if you think you are going to live in the area for long its beneficial to sign a one year lease.If you are not so sure, it is better to sign a six month lease.Because your savings on the rent are not worth the lease break fee.There might be additional one time or yearly fee for the swimming pool ,gym,tennis courts etc.They charge a months rent in advance as a security deposit.They will use this amount later for any paint/carpet/other damage/work once you leave and will mail you a check for the rest.

While you can stretch a little packing and moving, there are packers and movers services which will set you free.They are worth the price as you grow older , both age and money wise:).

Internet ,phone and cable are a few necessities that you have to work out in advance so that they can set you up as soon as you move in.Comcast and Verizon are two of the leading providers and they usually bundle up those three services.Thanks to the competition they are available in most of the locations and at competitive prices.Talk to the different providers as they do bargain/give you nice deals.


While you hop from one address to another and busy working on updating your address on your bank accounts etc you can use the USPS(United States Postal Service) mail forwarding service for a nominal fee.


Mission accomplished Over and In

As soon as you move in make sure everything is ok .From carpet to the heater,from oven to the shower - write down the list of things you notice are broken and hand it over in the rental office and you will not be blamed or charged of the security deposit when you leave.Once you settle down if you see any issues complain and get them fixed right away.


If you do not have enough time before you can do all the research using the info above and the WWW and if you are in one of those situations where your new client wants you to start right away - look for a cheap/decent motel close to work which will be your home until you find one.The extended stays normally come with a kitchen which are not a bad option for a temporary stay.

School Days : To My School With Love

భాషా రిక్షా ఆగక ముందే దుంకి వీపుకి బాగుని తగిలించుకొని చిన్న గేటు లోంచి లోపలకి అడుగెట్టగానే దారి పొడవునా రెండు వైపులా అసొకా చెట్లు స్వాగతం పలికేవి .

దూరంగా కుడి వైపు ఎలిమెంటరి స్కూలు భవనము ,ఎడమ వైపు హై స్కూలు భవనము ,వాటి రెండిటిని కలుపుతూ మద్యలో మా స్టేజి.మొత్తం వో పెద్ద కోటల వుంటుంది మా స్కూల్.ఇలొపే వాచ్ మన్ పెద్ద గేటు తెరిచాడు. స్కూలు బస్సు వచ్చి అగింది.అది సెకెండు ట్రిప్.మొత్తం మూడు ట్రిప్పులు వుండేవి.

వైట్ షర్టు ,బ్లూ నిక్కరు,బెల్టు ,టయీ ,బ్లూ సాక్స్,నల్ల బాట బూట్లు .మా స్కూలు పేరు  లొగో వుండే బెల్టు,టై.

మా క్రమసిక్షన అంతా పొద్దునే అస్సెంబ్లీలో కనపడేది.తరగతుల వారిగా వచ్చి హైటు వారిగా నిలుచునే వాల్లం.వినయంతో వందే మాతరం,చెయ్యి ముందర చాచి ప్లెడ్జి,దేశ భక్తితో జనగనమనా పాడే వాల్లం. 

క్రిస్టియన్ మిషీనరీ స్కూలు కనుక టీచ్చర్లతో పాటు సిస్టర్లు కూడా వుండే వారు.హెడ్ మిస్సెస్(మదర్) వీరందరికి పెద్ద.ఆరడుగుల ఆమెను ఎక్కడ చూసినా మాలో వినయం ,విదేయతా తన్నుకు వచ్చేవి.నాకు బాగ గుర్తు వున్న నా ఫ్యావరైట్ సిస్టర్స్ వెన్సి సిస్టర్ ,ముండా సిస్టర్.సిస్టర్ కి కోపం వచ్చినప్పుడల్ల అందరిని ముండా అని తిట్టేవారు.దాని ద్రుస్య ఆమెకు ఆ పేరు డిసైడు చేసేసారు పిల్లలు.అమ్మకు నా పై ప్రేమ పెరిగినప్పుడల్లా స్కూలుకు వచ్చి వెన్సీ సిస్టర్తో ముచ్చటించేది.అంతే వెన్సీ సిస్టర్ తొడ కొడితే నా తొడ వాచేది.ఇక్కడ మీకు చంటి గాడి కధ చెప్పాలి.

  ఈ ఫొటోలో అమాయకంగా నా పక్కనే,మూడో వరుసలు ఆకరున నిలొచొని వున్న వాడే ,వాడే నండీ చంటి గాడు.నెనేదో పెద్ద చదివే వాడినని  చంటి గాడిని నా పక్కనే కూర్చొని పెట్టారు.వెన్సీ సిస్టర్ పాటం చెప్పడంతో పాటు మాతో కూడా చదివించే వారు.ఒకరు ఆపిన వెంటనే మరొకరు అక్కడ నుంచి చదవడం మొదలెట్టాలి.చంటికి కంటి చూపు బావుండేది కాదు.పుస్తకాన్ని కల్లకి దగ్గరగా పెట్టుకు చదివే వాడు.దానికి తోడు వాడు చదివేది క్లాసు సంగతి వదిలేయండి పక్కనే కూర్చున్న నాకు కూడ వినిపించేది కాదు.చెక్కున ముగించి టక్కున కూర్చున్నాడు చంటి.నేను చదవడం మొదలెట్టగనే ప్రెమతో దగ్గరకు పిలిచారు సిస్టర్.స్కేలు విరిగింది తొడ ఎర్రగా వాచిన తరువాత గాని తెలియలేదు నేను వో పేజి వెనుక వున్నానని.

అమ్మ పంపిన లంచ్ బాక్సు ఫ్రెండుది,నాన్న కొనిచ్చిన టయ్యి చాలు మరి..


లంచ్ లో ఎవరి డబ్బా వాల్ల దగ్గర వుండేది కాదు.సాంబార్ తో మొదలెట్టిన వాల్లు చిల్లి చికెన్ తో ముగించే వారు.రోజూ క్యాంపుస్ మద్యలో బ్యాచీల వారిగా కూర్చుని లంచ్ చేసే వాల్లం.వర్షం పడితే ఎలిమెంటర్రి స్కూలు పక్కనే వున్న రేకుల షెడ్డులో కూర్చునే వాల్లం.మిగిలిన సమయంలో రీసెస్ బెల్లులో ఆటలు ఎక్కడ ఆగాయో అక్కడ నుంచే మొదలెట్టే వాల్లం.

మ్యుజిక్ పిరియడ్ లో పాటలు,అలుపే ఎరుగని ఆటలు.మద్యాహ్నం క్లాస్లు ప్రేయర్ తో మొదలెట్టే వాల్లం.SUPW-Socially Userful Productive Work.ప్రొడక్టివ్ సంగతి ఎమో కాని , ఆ అల్లికలు మాలో ప్రతిభను బయట పెట్టి మమ్మల్ని ఇరకాటంలో పడేసేవి.ఫ్లవర్ వాజు అల్లటానికి తెచ్చిన బంతితో క్రికెట్టు ఆడిన సంధర్భాలు లేకపోలేదు.

చేసిన తప్పును బట్టి సిక్షలు కక్షలూ వుండేవి..
మట్టాడిదే స్తాండప్,మాట వినకుంటే స్తాండప్ ఆన్ ద బెంచ్..
అదుపు తప్పితే నీల్డౌన్ యిన్ దా క్లాస్ ,తప్పిస్తే ఔట్సైడ్..
నిర్మలా మేడం డేవిడ్ పాల్ రాజ్ సార్ లంటే అందరికి షేక్..

పేపర్ రాకెట్లు ,బుక్ క్రికెట్,పెన్స్ ఆన్ ద బెంచి ఇలా ఏ సీజన్ కి ఆ సీజన్ లో ఫ్లూ వైరస్ లా ఒక క్లాస్ నుండి మరో క్లాస్ కి కొత్త ఆటలు సొకేవి.వాటిలో బెట్టింగు మ్యాచ్లు లేకపోలదు .కాకపొతే డబ్బు బదులు నోట్బుక్లలో పేజీలు చించి బెట్టుంగు పెట్టే వాల్లం.అలా వో సారి ఆకస్మిత తనికీలో నా బ్యాగ్లో పేపర్ల కట్ట దొరకడంతో స్టేజీ ముందు రోజంతా నీల్ డౌన్ చేసేసాం.అక్కడ కూడా ఇసుకలో నాలుగు రాళ్ళ ఆట ఆడాం అనుకోండి. 


డైరీ లో టీచరు రాసిచ్చే హోం వర్కు,పరీక్షల ప్రోగ్రెస్ రెపొర్ట్ పై నాన్న గారి సంతకం - ఆ రెండూ బ్యాన్ చెయ్యలని చాలా సార్లు చెర్చించే వాల్లం.

మా క్రియేటివిటీ అంతా గేంస్ పిరియడ్ ఆటలు కనిపెట్టడంలో కనిపించేది.జారుడు బండా పైన సిగ్మా(DD/Indian Version of StarTrek),దొంగా పోలిస్లో - తెహ్ కి కాత్  .అలా అని మమల్ని తక్కువ అంచనా వేస్తారేమో వాలి బాల్ ,బాస్కెట్ బాల్,క్రికెట్,రింగ్ బాల్ ,బాడ్మింటన్ లలో జిల్లా,స్టేట్ లెవెల్లలో కప్పులు,షిల్డులూ తరచూ తెస్తూనే వుండేవారు మా అబ్బాయిలు,అమ్మాయిలు.బ్యాటు ఎవడు తెస్తే వాడే క్రికెట్టు కింగు .అంటే రెండు సార్లు అవుటయినా చూసి చూడనట్టు ఊరుకోవాలి:).


ఎడమ వైపు గోడలకి పక్కనే టెంకాయి చెట్లు,కుడి వైపు కానక్కాయి చెట్లు .గోడల పై మన ఇండియా మ్యాప్ నుంచి అమెరికా వరకూ,ఎల్.కే.జి నుంచి బయాలజీలో మాకు పనికొచ్చే రక రకాల చిత్రాలు మమ్మల్ని ఆడుకుంటున్నప్పుడు కూడా ఆకర్షించేవి.

లాంగ్ బెల్లు కోసం వెయిటింగు,ఇంటికెల్లే ముందు షాపింగు..
లలితక్క బెల్లు ఎప్పుడు కొడుతుందా అని ప్రతి పిరియడు ఎదురు చూసినా(గేంస్ పిర్యడు తప్ప),లాంగ్ బెల్లు కోసం మటుకు కళ్ళు కాయలు కాసేట్టు ఎదురు చూసే వాల్లం.ఒక్క రకం కాదు లేండి రక రకాల కాయలు.లాంగ్ బెల్లుకి బాషా రిక్షాకి మద్యలో మరో ముక్యమయిన పని వుండేది.

అయిస్,పెప్సి,అయిస్ క్రీం,రేఖాయలు,కలేకాయలు,కంకి,సొడా,నిమ్మకాయి సోడ,లైం జూసు ఇలా రక రకాలు వుండేవి.అంటు మామిడికాయికి అయినా , జామకాయి అయినా సైజును బట్టి రేటు వుండేది.సీజన్ల తో పాటు బండ్లపై పండ్లూ,కాయలు మారిపోతుండేవి.జామకాయి అయినా ,అంటు మామిడికాయి అయినా ఉప్పుకారం వేసి ఇస్తే - "Taste Of India" లా వుండేది.రూపయి కర్చు పెట్టడానికి వో బడ్జెట్టు సమావసమే జరిగేది.అరోజుల్లో రూపయకి అంత విలువ వుండేది మరి.

భుదవారం సాయంత్రం డ్రిల్ వుండేది.రోజూలా కాకుండా ఆ రోజు వైట్ అండ్ వైట్ డ్రెస్ ,వైట్ క్యాన్వస్ షూస్ .సూపర్ స్టార్ క్రుష్న ద్యాన్సుకి ఏమాత్రం తీసిపోని ఆ డ్రిల్లు ,డేవిడ్ సార్ స్టేజి పై డ్రమ్ము వయిస్తుంటే ,పక్కనే నిలుచున్న ఎస్.పి.ఎల్ ఎలా చేస్తే అలా మేమందరం  చేసే వాల్లం.ఆ డ్రిల్ల్ ఎగగొట్టి టీచర్ల నుండి తప్పించుకొని బెంచీల కిందా ,కబోర్డ్లలో దాక్కునే వాల్లం.


శనివారం మేము ఎదురు చూసే రోజు.హాఫ్ డే అనే కాదు  ,సివిల్ డ్రస్సు డే.అంటే ఎవరు ఇష్టం వచింది వాల్లు వేసుకోవచన్నమాట.రోజు పొట్టి పొట్టి నిక్కర్లు వేసుకొచ్చే మేము ఆ రోజు మటుకు జీన్స్,బ్యాగి అలా ట్రెండును బట్టి కానిచ్చే వాల్లం.అమ్మయిలు ఇక చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు .ఏది ఏమి అయినా ఆ పద్దతి/దిసిప్లైన్/డీసెన్సీ మటుకు ఎప్పుడూ తప్పేవి కావు/తప్పనిచ్చే వల్లు కాదు టీచ్చెర్లు:).అసలు యునిఫారం యొక్క ప్రాముక్యత సాటర్డేనే తెలిసేది.

గేటుకి కుడి వైపున గోడకి ఆనుకొని  స్కూలు భవనాల వైపు చూస్తున్న చిన్న పిల్లవాడిలా వుండేది మా కాంటీన్.పప్పర్మెంట్లు ,రస్గుల్లాలు ,చిన్ని చిన్ని బొమ్మలు,సమొసాలు ,త్యాగలు తో పొదున్న రీసెస్స్ బెల్లు అయినా సయంత్రం ఇంటర్వెల్లు అయినా చినెమా హిరో చుట్టూ ఫ్యాన్స్ లా పిల్లలతో కిట కిట లడేది.ఏటా వో సారి కాంటీన్ డే మూడు కేక్లు ఆరు అయిస్ క్రీంల లా బాగా జరిగేది. యేటా వో సారి క్యాంటీన్ డే మూడు సమొసాలు అర డజన్ అయిస్ క్రీంలతో పుష్టిగా జరిగేది.

ప్రతి సంవస్తరం మొదట్లో లైబ్రరీలో పుస్తకాల తో పాటు కొత్త బెల్టు ,టయ్యి ఇచ్చేవారు.ప్రతి సంవస్తరం బెల్టు ,టయ్యి ఎందుకు? అంటార - బెల్టు విరిగేలా ఎవరు కొత్తిచుకోను వుందరెమో గాని ఆకలి వేసినా వెయ్యక పొయ్యినా టయ్యి మటుకు క్రమం తప్పకుండా తినే వాల్లం.అమ్మ కొట్టి టీచరు మొట్టితే కాని చదవని పుస్తకాలతో పాటు లైబ్రరీలో వివిద రకాల కధల పుస్తకాలు వుండేవి.ఆ కధలూ బొమ్మలు మమల్ని ఎంతో ప్రభావితం చేసేవి.

హాఫియర్లీ సెలవులకి ముందు క్రిస్టమస్సు పండుగ చాల గనంగా జరూపు కొనే వాల్లం.స్తేజీ పై డ్రమాలు ,తోలు బొమ్మలాటలు మమ్మల్ని విసేషంగా ఆకట్టు కొనేవి.అప్పుడే రిలీజ్ అయిన  హిట్ సాంగ్లుకు డ్యన్సులు  చిరు,నాగ్ల కి ఎమాత్రం తగ్గేవి కావు. ప్రతి ఫన్షన్ కీ స్టేజీ పైన పాటలు ,డ్యాన్సులు...


హై స్కూలు దగ్గర పడుతోంది అనగా క్లాస్స్ లో అసలు సంబందమే లేని వాల్లకి లింకులు పెట్టడం లాంటి పనులు చేసే వాల్లం.అలా వో సారి ఉదయ్ గాడికి నాజియాకి లింకు పెట్టి ముండా సిస్టర్ దీవెనలు అందుకున్నాను.

రిక్షా అయితే కొన్ని తీపి తిప్పలు ,బస్ అయితే మూడు ట్రిప్పులు..

కష్మీర్ నుంచి కన్యా కుమారి వరకు,నరసింహ కొండ నుంచి కోడూరు బీచ్ ,కూల్ డ్రింక్ ఫ్యాక్టరి, సోమసిల డ్యాము వరకు ప్లేస్ ఏదయినా ద్రిల్ మటుకు ఒక్కటే.తెల్లవారు జామున రేడి అయ్యి బస్సు పట్టుకొని అమ్మ ప్యాక్ చేసిన పూరీలు ,పులిహోరా,చాక్లేట్లు ,బిస్కెట్లు ఇలా పోటి పడుతూ తెచ్చిన రక రకాలు తింటూ ఆటలు,పాటలు ,మాటలు,డ్యాన్సులు పిక్నిక్ తీపి గ్నాపకాలు.

మూడవ తరగతి నుంచే ముంబై మాఫియా కి ఏమాత్రం తగ్గకుండా క్లాస్లో వర్గాలు ,గాంగ్లు.ప్రతి గాంగ్ కి వో లీడర్ ,నాయకురాలు వుండేవారు.అప్పుడప్పుడు శాంతి చర్చలు కూడా జరుగుతుండేవి.పిక్నిక్కులకి వెల్లినప్పుడు మటుకూ అవన్నీ మర్చిపొయ్యి అందరం కలసిపొయ్యి గలాటా చేసే వాల్లం

స్కూలు భవనం వెనకే పెద్ద తొటా దని పక్కనే హాస్టలు వుండేవి.పేద విద్యార్దులకి చాలా తక్కువ ఫీజు లేదా అసలు ఫిజే తీసుకొకుండా అన్ని వసతులు కల్పించే వారు.

ఎడమ వైపు గోడలకి ఆనుకొని టెంకాయి చెట్లు,కుడి వైపు కానక్కాయి చెట్లు వుంటాయి.గోడల పై మన ఇండియా నుంచి అమెరికా మ్యాప్ వరకూ,ఎల్.కే.జి నుంచి బైయాలజీ లో పనికొచ్చే రక రకాలు చిత్రాలు మమ్మల్ని ఆడుకుంటున్నప్పుడు కూడా ఆకర్షించేవి.

కాలిపోయిన బల్బులో నీల్లు నింపి ,అవతల పక్క వో ఫిల్ము పెట్టి చిరంజీవి సినెమా చూపించడం నుంచి రాబొట్ల వరకు ప్రతి సైన్సు ఫేరులో వో అయిన్శ్టీనో,అరిస్టాటిలో కనబడేవారు.

ఇండిపెండెన్స్ డే ,రిపబ్లిక్ డే లకి జండా ఆవీష్కరన తో పాటు ముక్య అతిదులుగా విచ్చేసిన డి.ఇ.ఓ,జిల్లా కలెక్టర్లు మా అందరికి చాక్లేట్లు ,బిస్కెట్లు పంచి పెట్టే వారు.ఆ రోజు భుదవారంలా వైట్ అండ్ వైట్ లో వచ్చే వాల్లం.

ఏటా వో సారి క్లాస్ ఫోటో డే వుండేది .ఇప్పట్లా డిగిటల్ ఎస్ ఎల్ ఆర్ కెమెరాతో కొట్టే వంద ఫొటోలలా కాకుండా,మామూలుకెమెరాతో తీసిన ఆ ప్రతి ఒక్క ఫొటో
ఎంతో విలువైనవి.

ఏ.టీ ,యు.టీ పరీక్షల తో పాటు క్వాటర్లీ అవ్వగానే దసరా సెలవలూ ,హాఫియర్లీ అవ్వగానే క్రిస్టమస్సు/సంక్రాంతి సెలవలు ,యానువలి అయ్యాక సమ్మర్ హాలిడేస్ వుండేవి.పరిక్షలకు ముందు ఒక్క పూట బడి వుండేది.ప్రతి పరీక్షకీ రిక్షాకి మద్యలో అట్ట క్రికెట్ వుండేది.ప్యాడు బ్యాటు ,రబ్బరు బంతి లేక పొతే కొచ్చెన్ పేపరే వుండగ చుట్టి బాలు.


స్కూలు మొదలవుతుంది అనగానే కొత్త యునీఫారంలు,బూట్లు,పుస్తకాలు వాటికి అట్టలు,లేబుల్లు అభోవ్ ఒక పండుగ వాతావరనమే ఏర్పడేది.

ఆ రోజు అలా క్రమసిక్షనా ,స్నేహభావం నేర్పారు కాబట్టే , ఇ రోజు ఇలా రయ్యగలుగుతున్నాను..Dedicated to my Teachers and Friends.

Warm Up - While in campus

This is the first article in the series of articles intended to guide a college grad in his journey from campus to his dream career if not a career.In this brief warm up article lets talk about what you can do while in college and also a few tips while researching for on/off campus interviews.I will be writing more about the interview process,higher education options etc in the future articles.Since my major was computer science and i claim to have good first hand knowledge of IT ,the examples sited will be mostly IT related and students from other fields/branches have to substitute appropriately.


Knowing our-self - change begins here

Only when we know about our-self can we improve.Do a self check,accept your weaknesses and use your strengths to overcome them.Work on your percentages and communication skills.They play a key role in the screening process once you get to the interviews.And there can not be a better time to fix these than while in college.While there are several books that can help you with the communication part,one easy way i found to improve our listening skills,aptitude and English  vocabulary is by using the TOEFL and GRE material/software's.Take the mock exams these software's offer and see where you can improve.While working on your percentages make sure you get the basics right.Fill the technical gaps by taking any additional outside courses required for the core subjects. example: Operating Systems,Data Structures,C,OOPS,Java etc

Meet the Aliens
Thanks to the number of colleges and the IT boom it is  not an exaggeration if i say there is a at-least one working engineer per family.Get in touch with them.They might be busy and might not respond as you expect. But keeping your ego aside try to stay in touch with them.Learn from them on what is expected once you are out in the wild and what you can improve on.And also develop a clarity on your long term goals and sync up your short term goals with them.I cant stress enough on the importance of Clarity Of Thought as i still see so many confused college grads out in the fish market.


Sync Up - Understand and get used to the Planet/Corporate culture

I need not tell you that College and Profession are two different planets.If you are lucky enough to work for a IT Company as a part of your college project you might already know how teams are organized or at-least how different they are from college.If you dint make it to one ,don't worry - Its an age of virtual reality .Talk to your Professor/HOD and request them to -

Break up the class in to teams with four to five members on each project team.Every team should have analysts,leads,developers,testers,documentation.Let the lecturer in-charge be the manager and your Head Of The Department(HOD) be the CEO:).This will cease or at-least reduce the gap between academic projects and the projects out there in the wild.Rotate your roles so that everyone gets to step in to everyone elses shoes.No matter what your role is be professional and responsible,as this will help you in your career where in you don't have a choice but to accept a particular role. Don't fight over a role.IT is not about how you work as an individual but as a team.Companies often look for candidates who can wear multiple hats and that is another place where this will help.If you have a chance to work on several projects STOP after each project and retrospect and share with the team and the class the lessons you have learnt and insights for the future.

Research Research and Analyze

Know the companies that have visited your campus in the last few years.Get in touch with the college placement board in advance and get the list of companies that will be visiting.Get the list of candidates that were selected previously and their contact information from the college alumni if possible and stay in touch with them.They are good source of inputs.They might even be on the next interview panel.This stands good for off campus interviews as well.Use the internet and its power to your benefit and not the other way around.Gather as much information about the position and the company on hand.Don't let the social networking bug bite you ,but bite your share of it to stay in touch with the people in the industry and communities that post job interview tips.Knowing about the company and the kind of work they do will help you not only prepare for the technical interviews but also answering several tricky HR questions later.


Here are a few examples of how various companies operate, which might give you some idea on choosing a Company.

Services companies like TCS,Infosys,CTS have a huge offshore base in India.And they also have good on-site presence abroad.So if you are looking for long abroad stay and earning in other currency opportunities these are good places to start.TCS even promises to definitely send you abroad by the end of your 2nd year of service.On the other hand they might ask you to sign a bond for the training they have provided and that might get extended every-time you travel abroad.The salary packages might be a slightly low here as they expect you to make out the most savings from your stay abroad.

Product based companies like SAP ,Oracle,Microsoft have their ODC(offshore development center) in India and they normally prefer you work there and travel on-site on short trips once in a while.You might work your way and become a part of their on-site team eventually.But comparatively there are fewer chances.These firms often offer a very good pay&benefits and you might get to work on some core/interesting(depends:) technologies.

Companies like Infosys,Wipro might even support you do your masters from IIMS provided you clear the required entrance exams and will pay for the entire course provided you work for them for a few years later.This is not bad again depending on where your priorities are.

This is not a complete list and again your contacts in the industry and the amount of time you spend on research will help prepare at different points in your career.Be clear on your goals and do not let crazy competition on to your brain.And Yes, college is the time you have to enjoy.But it also is the time for you to lay a good foundation for your future.Just use the time in the best possible way.

అనగనగా వొ బెంగులూరు మహా నగరం.ఆ ఊరిలో ముగ్గురు మిత్రులు.వాల్లు జస్ట్ మిత్రులు కాదు - స్కూలు,కలేజి,టినేజి అంతా కలసి ఈదేసిన ప్రాణ స్నేహితులు.ఉద్యోగ వేట టీనేజి కలేజి లా కాదని ,అది వో పెద్ద డ్రైనేజి అని అర్దం చేసుకోవటానికి వాల్లకి రెండు సంవస్తరాలు పట్టింది.


ఈ మద్యనే ఒకరి తరువాత ఒకరు ఒకే చిన్న సాఫ్టు వేరు కంపెనిలో ఉద్యోగాలు సాదించారు.నెలకు ఏడు వేలు జీతం.మరి మన వాల్ల కర్చు అంటార పది వేలకి తగ్గదు .అందరిది కలిపి కాదు ,ఒక్కోకరిది.ఇంటి నుంచి డబ్బు తెప్పించుకోరు.మొహమాటం కాదు,ఊరిలో,ఇళ్ళలో వాల్లు ఇచ్చిన్న బిల్డ్ అప్ అలాంటిది.సంవస్తరం క్రితమే ఒకరు ఒరాకిల్,ఒకరు ఇంఫోసిస్ మరొకరు టి.సి.ఎస్ అంటూ కమ్మిట్ అయ్యారు. ఎప్పుడయినా ఊరికి వెల్లవలసి వస్తే ఒక్కరే వెల్తారు.అంటే ముగ్గురూ వెల్తే పని ఆగిపొతుంది అని కాదు,వీల్లు చేసే పనికి అంత సీను లేదు.అసలు మెలికేంటంటే ఒకరు ఊరికి వెల్లాలంటే మిగిలిన ఇద్దరు నగలు తాకట్టు పెట్టాలి.మరి ఒరకిల్ అన్నాక ఆ మాత్రం కర్చులు వుండొదేంటి.ఆ అప్పు తీరాక మరొకరు వెల్లేవారు.

రాంబాబు - కొంచం ఆశ ఎక్కువ. మొహమ్మద్ గజిని తో పోటి పడుతూ ఈ మద్యనే పదహారో దండయాత్ర అదే పెళ్ళి చూపులు ముగించుకు వచ్చాడు.అంతా అయ్యాక తనకి మొట్ట మొదట చూసిన అమ్మాయి నచ్చిందనడంతో , కాల్లు విరగొట్టి బస్సు ఎక్కించారు నాన్న గారు.


అవినాష్ - కొంచం దూకుడు ఎక్కువ.ముగ్గురిలో శని గ్రహానికి కొంచం దూరం లో వున్న ఉపగ్రహం వీడు ఒక్కడే.


బాల - ఇంటి పని అయినా,వంట పని అయినా ,ఆఫీసు వర్క్ అయినా నెమ్మదిగా ఎంతో భక్తి శ్రద్దలతో చేసే స్వభావం.


అది మామూలు సోమవారం కాదు,అలా అని కార్తీక సోమ వారము కాదు ,కాని వాల్ల ముగ్గురికి ఎంతో ముక్యమయిన నెలాకరు శాలరీ డే మండే.


అవినాష్ కార్డు పెట్టాడు, పిన్ను కొట్టాడు.


టాకింగ్ 2జి బ్యాంక్ ఏ.టి.ఎం: అవినాష్ , శాలరీ పడింది రో ,పండగ చెస్కో అంటూ రిసీప్టు ప్రింటు చేసింది టాకింగ్ ఏ.టి.ఎం.


దాంట్లో ఏడు వేలకి బదులు పద్నాలుగు వేలు అని వుంది బ్యాలెన్సు.ఆస్చర్యం లో మునిగిన ముగ్గురికీ బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్లో ఒకే పాట -"కజరారే కజరారే..."


అవినాష్: నా జీతం రెండు సార్లు వేశారంటవా?


రాంబాబు: నాకూ ఒసారి ఇలానే జరిగింది .ఆనందంలో మల్లీ తీసుకుందాం అని వున్న డబ్బు తో జల్సా చేశా .మరుసటి రోజు మొత్తం వెన్నకి వెల్లిపోయింది.


బాల: అలా ఎలా చేస్తారు బ్యాంక్ వాల్లు?


రాంబాబు: అమౌంట్ వాల్ల దగ్గర వున్నంత వరకు ఏమయినా చెయ్యగలరు,నా మాట విని మొత్తం తీసెయ్.


అవినాష్: అంటే మొత్తం ఏడు వేలు నా?


రాంబాబు: కాదు మొత్తం పద్నాలుగు వేలు..


అవినాష్: కాని..?


రాంబాబు: కర్చు పెట్టడం రాని వాడికి దబ్బు వుండ కూడదు.డబ్బులున్నపుడు అలోచించ కూడదు.అయినా వద్దు వద్దు అనుకుంటే, వచ్చేట్టు వున్నాయి డబ్బు అయినా ,పెళ్ళి అయినా.ఇంకేం ఆలోచించకు అంటూ...ఆటో అన్నాడు...


బాల: ఎక్కడికి?


రాంబాబు: ఫోరం


బాల: మరి ఆఫిస్?


రాంబాబు: మనం హల్ఫ్ డే ఆఫ్ తీసుకుంటే ఎకానమీ ఏమీ దివాల తియ్యదు లే.


ఆ రోజు అంతా రాంబాబు ఆద్వర్యంలో పి.వి.ఆర్ లో రాయల్ క్లాస్-అయిదు వందలు టికెట్టు పెట్టి ధొబీ ఘాట్ సినిమా చూసి,బ్రిగెడ్ రోడ్లో కరీదయిన షాపింగు చేసి,నాసా పబ్బు లో మిగతా ముక్య మైన కార్యక్రమాలు ముగించుకున్నారు.బ్యాలెన్సు ఏడు వేలకు చేరి,వాల్లు ఇంటికి చేరే సరికీ అర్ద రాత్రి రెండు గంటలు అయింది.

మరుసటి రోజు - హ్యాంగ్ ఓవర్ వదిలే సరికి లంచ్ టైం అయింది.....


నిన్నలా ఎంజాయ్ చేసి చాలా రోజులు అయింది రా అంటూ రాంబాబు కార్డు పెట్టాడు, పిన్ను కొట్టాడు.


టాకింగ్ 2జి బ్యాంక్ ఏ.టి.ఎం:  దేవుడు నాకు రెండు చేతులు ఇచ్చి వుంటే వీడి కాలర్ పట్టుకొని చొక్కా చిరిగేట్టు కొట్టే దాన్ని అంటూ ,పిడ్డేల్ మని కార్డు ఈడ్చి మొహాన కొట్టింది.ఏముందని కార్డు పెట్టావ్ బాబు రాంబాబు,బ్యలన్సు నిల్లు బాసూ అంది ఏ.టి.ఎం.


ముగ్గురికీ బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్లో ఒకే మ్యుసిక్ -"అయ్యయ్యొ-చెతిలొ-దబ్బులు-పొయనె...అయ్యయూ"


కాసేపు తరువాత తేరుకొని..


రాంబాబు: అవినాష్ వైపు చూస్తూ అరెయ్ నా దౌట్ ఎంటంటే , నాది నీదాంట్లో వేసరా.నీకు ఎక్కువ వేశారని నా దాంట్లో పీక్కున్నారా?


అవినాష్: నేను ఇవ్వ?


రాంబాబు: అది కాదు రా..


అవినాష్: నేను ఇవ్వా!!


బాల:  చక్కటి చిరు మందహాసం తో రాంబాబు వైపు చూసి - ఏది ఏమి అయినా నీ ఫిలాసఫీ మటుకు సూపరు మామ - కావాలి కావాలి అంటే వచ్చేట్టు లేవు డబ్బు అయినా ,పిల్ల అయినా...
 
Inspired by a recent happening - i had to call my previous employer and ask him to stop paying bi-weekly ,as they dint - even after a month after i left:)

The Tom and Jerry Phi-laws-of-(li)fey

On the southernmost tip of the US in the paradise state of Florida in the beautiful island city of Key West was the Higg's Beach with its clear waters and luxurious beach houses .In one of those luxurious condos lived Jerry the cute little rat in a 4 bed and 5 bath rat hole. With a hope for a better if not best life ,he and his bachelor friends  sneaked in from Cuba on a cargo ship that carried tons of Cuban cigars. All they brought with them were the skills they have learned from their parents and teachers. Its stomach is so small and could accommodate very little. But even when its stomach is full, if it smells something good in the kitchen it immediately makes sure to have a bite and leave the rest in a inedible state. On the board walk next to the condos lived the powerfully black cat- Tom. He was well fed by the restaurants and other stores on the famous Duval Street. And in return he used to take care of the rodent population and the problems that come with them.

Jerry not only used to steal more food than what he needs but also anything and everything from kids toys to car keys. Each time Jerry escapes a rat trap or a Tom cat attack instead of remembering how lucky he was to be alive and the one responsible for it, he used to boast about its speed and agility. As it grew materialistically older and spiritually lower, he has lost his agility and good friends .He was soon surrounded by rats with similar mentality and goals for life - Steal as much as we can, save as much as we can and live each day selfishly. Even within that small group they used to compete and bring home all that was totally unnecessary.Soon they started stealing each others food and then came the fear and worry of loss.Once in a while they talk about their past and those nostalgic childhood days back in Cuba,but ignored who were responsible for all that happiness. As he moved from house to house he built a rat hole so huge that it was enough to breed 1000 more rats, but he lived all alone in his four bed and five bath fortresses.


Like every Friday night after having his European dinner and Arabian dessert,Jerrys tongue wanted the taste of strawberry ice-cream which it saw that morning in the freezer. Jerry quickly made his Robinhood moves .It was no ordinary Friday night. As the dark clouds swallowed the full moon he could barely see a thing in the dark house. As he got old his vision blurred down with age and it started relying more on its extra ordinary smelling/hearing capabilities which are no more extra. If there was anything on this planet other than bat/owl that could see/walk through at ease in that darkness, it was Tom the black cat. It can run like a Cheetah and hide like a Chameleon - It is as black/dark as that night .Like a lion sitting on the edge of a rock scaring away other animals in the jungle, Tom patiently waited for Jerry relaxed on the dining table. Jerry could smell the danger but his ego/senses(tongue) over rode his fear. As it crawled across the hallway and was about to enter the kitchen, Tom jumped on to it with its claws wide open ,caught it with its left claw and tore it with its sharp nails in to pieces.


Very similar to this Tom & Jerrys story, today we travel places(some cities, some states, some countries) far from our loved ones in search of better/superior life. We quickly change to  suit the vicious world far from simplicity (ever lasting happiness).We eat more than what we need and we buy more than what we use. Bite/Taste every dam thing just for the heck of it.Like the rat traps/Tom-cat as we go through the tough times and as we swim out of them, instead of learning from them we try to act/ignore them and those who helped us come out of them. Developing a sense of "I" and the ego that comes with it. We say that we are far from those(our own) in need and we do not know a way to help them , but we know how to find the best of the online or in store deals on the newly released electronics or a dream vacation. We party for every silly reason while there are countries starving. We pray not to be happy with what we have but for more which we don’t need.(Ignorance).

As we try to find shortcuts to success we develop a false ego and superiority/jealousy. This allows us to easily blame others for our mistakes and also take credit for their hard work. We crazily compete - starting from Houses,Kids,Cars,Vacations,Jobs trying  to prove - ours are always the best!.We rarely notice/appreciate the talent in our neighbors but talk about the seven wonders and the billionaires far far away(Isolate).


Even though there are live examples everywhere and in the history books - we fool our self believing that what we have at every stage of our life is permanent. We soon forget the simple purpose of life and complicate it with unnecessary attachments only to develop a fear of loss/disease. (Fear)


While we are lost in our busy selfish lives planning for the far future, like Tom in the story death is just around the corner watching/waiting for us and will sweep us off the feet taking our breadth away(Diminish/Perish).


With an ego we ignore, in ignorance we isolate(religions,regions,castes,status etc),in isolation we fear(insecure),with insecurity we loose memory/forget(what we are/were and the one responsible) and then we diminish/perish!


The Tom and Jerry story/cycle continues!

12 Marks For Dancing & TAGDV Sankranthi Celebrations 2011

Not that i have won an oscar but - This post on the blog is dedicated to every professor like Lingaraju Sir who not only guided us academically to be good professionals but also encouraged us in every tiny aspect of our lives and taught us by example on how to be good human-beings.

@@@10 years ago some Shimoga Standard Time...






It was a small but well decorated stage on the lawn in the middle of our three storied computer science department building.The stage was built with atmost planning/care by a bunch of final year students under the supervision of two newly joined lecturers .They were so possesive about it that they dint want any one to dance claiming that it was too small and delicate.All that was allowed for that evenings yearly COSMOS(our Dept Nick Name) departmental function were a few songs and speeches.Disappointed ,as i was stepping out of the building i ran in to our CG(Computer Graphics) Professor SM Lingaraju Sir.One of the - not only mine but many others - favorites from our engineering days.On a casual note he asked me if i am peforming that evening and i explained him the situation.It took him just a few mins/words to convince/command the lecturers who once were his students that i can perform no matter what the stage looks like.But I had to go solo dropping of my two buddies who practiced hard for two weeks.







That evening like a circular parking lot at a busy shopping center as the department floors got stacked up with students/lecturers i have danced for that years mass masala telugu number gajuvaka pilla amidst loud cheers.As i started off solo on stage my buddies joined me from the crowd dancing right next to the stage.






The very next next day we had our CG(Computer Graphics)final internal exam.I did great in the first two but for this i was only half prepared for obvious reasons.As i walked in to the class half tensed Lingaraju sir accepting my greetings announced to the class that he is awarding me 12 grace marks for my dance performance on stage the day before.12 out of 25 and as i said i was prepared for the other half already:).

The TAGDV (Telugu Association of Greater Delaware Valley) Sankrathi celebrations started of beautifully with Bommalakoluvu & Drawing and Rangavalli(Muggula) Competitions for kids.


While we actually planned/praticed to do one slot the organizers at TAGDV wanted us to do one more and we had to sneek in a couple of our 2009 classics:) at the last minute.As we enjoyed every other performance on stage and the food , they have enjoyed our performances with cheers and encouraging words later.The program concluded with bogipallu for kids .


An update on the program was also aired on TV9.

Simhapuri Times:I am not that type,Leave me alone!

"The events depicted in this story are fictitious. Any similarity to any person living or dead is merely coincidental."


Satya is a 6 foot fair and handsome guy who has cleared his ICAI exam for accountants an year ago with a good score and has secured a highly paid job at a top notch MNC in Hyderabad which does tax handling for clients all over India.Along with his yearly bonus he also recently got married to his one and only girl friend Divya.

That evening as they plan to go watch a romantic movie , Satya receives a call on his cell.As he ends the call looking at his depressed face, Divya goes in to the bed room and comes out with a small briefcase.She is not leaving him but - Like a first aid kit in the RTC bus ,like an ambulance with a ventilator ready to pick up a patient - that briefcase has a imported shaving kit ,a 3 piece suit,tooth brush/paste,comb,a India Today and two other very important costumes. It is Satyas travel kit and today he has to go fix tax accounts/returns for a leading Editorial - Simhapuri Times.With top notch salaries comes working late hours and travel.Apologizing to Divya and kissing her good bye, Satya rushes to catch the Simhapuri express at 9 PM.Its a 10 hour Train journey to Simhapuri.

The next morning,dressed up in his 3 piece suit he meets the accountants at Simhapuri Times.Simapuri Times is a 10 acre campus with huge glass buildings and a lot of ongoing renovation/construction work.To one corner next to the archival section is the accounting department.Right next to it is a small chamber seperated by a glass wall.In that chamber are two guys and girl working busily as if they are controlling the entire Simhapuri Times operations.As Satya enters the accounting room one of those two guys in the other chamber with short hair  keeps staring at Satya seriously.Not paying much attention Satya quickly gets to work remembering Divya and to finish up early and return.

After lunch as he walks in to the kitchen for some coffee.,he runs in to the same serious guy who stares at him top to bottom and says - "nice hair style".Feeling weird Satya quickly walks out for a fag and calls Divya.As he turns back with his  cell phone in one hand he sees the same guy staring at him from the window and smiling.Irritated Satya hangs up the call ,picks up a small iron rod  next to the construction area and get back to work.He keeps the rod in his briefcase and turns back to find that the guy is still staring at him.He quickly finishes his work and walks out to realize that the guy is following him hiding something in his hand.

As Satya tries to run, the guy runs faster.As he gets closer,Satya removes the rod from his suitcase and holds the guy by his collar and pushes him towards the wall and shouts-"What the hell are you doing,I am married and i am not that type, leave me alone!".The guy holds Satyas hand and shows him the paper he has in the other hand.

Shocked and Embarrassed- Satya drops the rod and says sorry and thanks in a low voice.He says sorry and thanks one more time.Looking at his caricature he walks out lighting a cigarette and immediately calls Divya to share the entire experience.He later learns that that guy was an intern cartoonist as Simhapuri Times and that Caricature needs a lot of observation of features and working on the proportions.And that it also needs observing the actions and reactions.

Florida Part 1:Six days in Orlando

Wanted to share this for quiet sometime and here it is finally!

Every Wednesday before Thanks Giving we leave work early, not to avoid traffic but to reach the airport in-spite of it.Pushing  the button for the parking ticket i find a spot and she remembers the lot - wait for the shuttle to take us to the airport.From checking in the baggage to the long lines at the security check everything flies by in excitement as we share a Starbucks mocha walking towards the gate.Not only excited about the holidays and vacation but mostly about our anniversary that comes right after thanks giving and its a 6 day celebration every year!

While making fun of the air hostess during her flight safety demo and about the peanuts they serve we decide on the  movies to watch.As the sky turns red welcoming the sun to bed high in the air filled with joy and away from this busy busy world we revise our six day plan one more time.Check out the rental car for dents and check in at the hotel - we crash in to the bed dreaming about the beautiful land.

Universal Studios - Cant get any better as we chose the day after the holiday ,i.e the monday .My previous experience from Universal in LA helped in the decision making process:).Forget about long queues there were no queues for most of the rides - Mummy,Terminator,MIB.We loved simpsons 3D so much that we kept on returning from the exit to the entrance!.

Simhapuri Stories : The Rich Beggar

Once up on a time while you read this story, on the banks of the sacred river penna is the beautiful city of Simhapuri.

Like every other day Venkatesh is waiting at the Nippo factory bus-stop to catch the 9 O Clock bus to work.Like every other government initiative the bus-stop that was constructed a few months back soon turned in to a home for the beggars.And the buses usually stop 10 or 15 feet away from the bus-stop.Leaning on his back next to one of the the bus-stops pillars looking at Venkatesh was a very old man in his torn/patched up light brownish clothes.Venkatesh never payed much attention to him but has first seen this old man and four other beggars in this bus-stop couple of months ago.The old man normally stays at the busstop while the other four beggers collect waste cans/botlles/paper from garbage and sell them for their living.

Venkatesh who works as a clerk at the municipal office has spent half of his life and money in helping others and today he is in need of two lakhs rupees to send his daughter to the medical school.Venkateshs mind is filled with sadness as none of his friends or relatives came forward to help him ,instead blamed him for his situation.He is left with no other option than selling his house.

Suddenly the old beggar looking at Venkatesh said -Son, Catch the train that leaves to Chennai from platform number 3 at 10AM .Catch the 11 C bus from the station.Get down at Guindy.Walk down to the Madras Race Club .At the betting counter,do a Straight bet of 5000 rs on horse number 4 for the race that starts at 3 PM.

Venkatesh first thought that the beggar has gone mad .After sometime he thought - may be the beggar was once a gambler and lost all his property while betting on horse races.The beggar says - If you are thinking that i am a mad beggar talking randomly, you are wrong.It is by your karma that made you stand here and time has come for you to cherish all that good you have packed for your self.It will be more money than you need to send your daughter to the medical school.

After a brief shock he runs to the ATM  and then catches auto and makes it just on time for the Chennai passenger train.It is a three hour travel to Chennai.Venkatesh still can not believe that he is doing all this listening to the words of a beggar.He catches the bus to Guindy.

There are not many people in the race course.Venkatesh saw a  man in his fifties wearing a cricket cap,eyes covered with goggles and holding a walking stick in one hand and a cigar in the other a few seats away .Next to him standing were a couple of security personnel.At 3 PM as the jockeys take off Venkatesh holds on tight to his seat and closes his eyes forgetting about everything around him and he sees a vision of the old man and his words.Half way through the race he opens his eyes to see horse number 4 in third place.Venkatesh closes his eyes again praying.As they approach the finish line Venkatesh opens his eyes and looks at the TV monitors.Shocked/Thrilled , with out uttering an other word he walks toward the prize money collection counter.

The guy in goggles was Sundhar Pandiyan , the rubber business tycoons in Tamil Nadu.Horse racing is one of his gambling habits and when he remembers that once every 3 or 4 months he throws a few lakh rupees which today is forty,i.e four million rupees.

Venkatesh rents a taxi and rushes  straight to Simhapuri and to the Nippo factory bus-stop only to see that there is a traffic jam for miles on either sides of the road.From the crowd outside he hears that there is a swamy in the Nippo factory bus-stop whose predictions came true and few  were saved from death and a few turned rich overnight.As Venkatesh makes his way through the crowd he finds those four beggars standing on the four sides of the busstop blocking people .Next to them is an other layer of security - police.Standing in a queue are the richest of the rich jewelers,politicians waiting for the old beggars call.

Venkatesh goes home happy and later through TV comes to know that the saint was born in Bihar and left to the Himalayas at a very young age and no one knows how old he is now and those four beggars serving him are his disciples.

As long as we run for money it stays away from us and when we think we are happy with what we have and stop worrying  about it, it will run to us and we will be the happiest person on this planet.We can see this today with the richest of ministers and business men surrounding the sanyaasis who gave up everything and are not interested in any of the worldly pleasures.
